The current military and political mood in the Sahel region countries is anti-France (as colonial enemy), anti-West and anti-democracy. The recent withdrawal of the French and the UN Peacekeeping force should also be brought under scrutiny. No doubt, the withdrawal of peacekeeping forces in Mali and recent coup in Niger would downgrade human security of the Sahel region. All these crises have been paving the way for Russia and China to make tricky entry into the region. Interestingly, the coup in Niger occurred at such a time when Russia has been hosting a summit of African leaders at St Petersburg. The military takeover incidents in the Sahel region will be an opportunity for Russia to show the international stakeholders that it has significant military and political leverage to spread influence in Africa. The restoration of democracy and the rule of law in the Sahel region, at present, is now appearing as a distant foghorn!
